Legislation Allows Veterans to Salute the Flag WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today praised the passage by unanimous consent of his bill (S.1877) clarifying U.S. law to allow veterans and servicemen not in uniform to salute the flag. Current law (US Code Title 4, Chapter 1) states that veterans and servicemen not in uniform should place their hand over their heart without clarifying whether they can or should salute the flag.

The top three locations are posted with information about the area, who the Casper planner is and a link to vote. Please go to: http://www.ReunionLocation.htm. The reunion site will be announced in January 2007. Again, voting is for members only. Following the banquet, the CAPO Board of Directors and several of the Executive Officers all agreed to make General Williamson an Honorary Member.

Possible Link: Agent Orange and Diabetes The Department of Defense released recently the latest report of the Air Force Health Study on the health effects of exposure to herbicides in Vietnam, which includes the strongest evidence to date that Agent Orange is associated with adult-onset diabetes. This supports the findings from earlier reports in 1992 and 1997. The Air Force Health Study summarizes the results of the 2002 physical examination of 1,951 veterans, which is the final examination of the 20-year epidemiological study. Since the first examination in 1982, the Air Force has tried to determine whether long-term health effects exist in the Ranch Hand pilots and ground crews, and if these effects can be attributed to the herbicides used in Vietnam, mainly Agent Orange and its contaminant, dioxin. Results from the 2002 physical examination support adult-onset diabetes as the most important health problem seen in the Air Force Health Study. They suggest that as dioxin levels increase, not only are the presence and severity of adult-onset diabetes increased, but the time until the onset of the disease is decreased. The report, along with many other studies on herbicide and dioxin exposure, will be reviewed by the National Academy of Sciences. Based upon this review, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs can ask Congress for legislation on disability compensation and health care. For all the details, please go to: The report is available on the Air Force Health Study website.

Casper Reunion White House Tour The White House Tour Office has approved a tour for us on Friday, 24 June at 0830 hours. This is the only time that is available for us during our reunion. The bus tour for Saturday, 25 June is still scheduled and will be an excellent experience. The White House Tour schedule presents us with some challenges, however. We must now find out how many of you will be able to attend this tour and lay on appropriate transportation. If you are able to change your travel itinerary, I recommend that you do so. If you are unable to change your schedule, I sincerely apologize that this event is outside your time in Washington. Unfortunately, the time slot is driven by the White House and beyond our control. In order to accurately predict our transportation requirements for this tour, I will need to know how many of you will want to participate. Because of the time constraints, I will need this information No Later Than Tuesday 24 MAY. I anticipate that transportation cost will be around $15 per person. Please email me at wfielding1@msn.com with the total numbers in your party. I will then lay on transportation and let you know what the exact cost will be. I will collect this at the time of boarding. (plan on exact amount in cash). I look forward to hearing from you, Bill Fielding, Casper Reunion Chairman 2005.

In The Shadow Of The Blade The award-winning Vietnam documentary “In The Shadow of The Blade” will be nationally televised Thursday, February 3, 2005 from 8-10 p.m. ET on the Military Channel. The movie follows the journey of restored Huey helicopter 091 into the backyards of Vietnam veterans and their families as a catalyst to tell their untold stories. As the icon of the Vietnam War, the UH-1 “Huey” helicopter was a lifeline for combat troops, providing transportation, supplies and medical evacuation. More than 7,000 Hueys served in Vietnam and nearly half were destroyed.

Two Former COs Sponsor Casper Platoon Flag Project In preparation for the Casper Reunion 2004, Gary Braden volunteered to produce our own Casper Flag so that we could properly post our colors at the reunion banquet. The actual project became more expensive when Gary also recommended a 173d Airborne Brigade flag, the flag poles, carrying cases and the table center pieces for this event. The total cost got to be pretty high and to the point that we almost cancelled this idea. However, two former Casper Platoon Commanding Officers stepped in and sponsored the project with a generous donation. Thank you to Richard Head and Stan Streicher for your support and Gary Braden for heading up this project. Reply to: Ned Costa NCHuey721@aol.com

Books For Our Troops Capt. David Spencer is an officer with the 173d Airborne Brigade, stationed in Northern Iraq. His father wrote the Niagara Falls Reporter and asked them to help his son out by sending him books for the troops. "Lots of guys here read novels," he wrote his father. "A lot of them spend time sitting in safe houses where they have time to read. I've heard mention of a book exchange, where people could drop off and pick up books. I'm getting a bookcase to put in our front 'lobby,' and now we will need some books. "I will have room for up to about 200 novels or so, and would like to get a bunch of books to start them. Suppose they don't all have to be novels, as long as it's interesting reading. Classics are fine, as these guys read just about anything they can get their hands on." Apparently all you have to do is to select a book, put in an envelope, and mail it ("book rate" postage is fine) to: CPT David Spencer, Task Force 1-63 Armor, c/o 173rd Airborne Brigade, APO AE 09347. You also might want to include a little note thanking Capt. Spencer and his comrades for their sacrifices. Reply to: Larry Pippen pippenl@usa.net
